Java is the world's most-used enterprise language. Learning it gives kids a massive head start in tech.
Java powers Minecraft — kids can understand and eventually mod their favorite game
Build real Android apps that run on phones and tablets
Learn to organize code into objects — a skill used in every major tech company
Java remains the #1 language for enterprise jobs, banking, and large-scale systems
Java catches errors early — kids learn disciplined, reliable coding habits
Write once, run anywhere — Java works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile
8 progressive modules taking kids from "Hello World" to building their own games.
Print messages, store data in variables, understand data types (int, String, boolean)
If/else decisions, switch statements, and comparison operators to make smart programs
For loops, while loops, and do-while — repeat actions and process collections
Organize code into reusable methods with parameters and return values
Create your own types — model real-world things like animals, vehicles, and game characters
Store and manipulate collections of data — high scores, inventories, player lists
Build on existing classes, create hierarchies, and write flexible code
Put it all together — build text adventures, number guessers, and simple GUI games

Java has more syntax than Python, but our curriculum introduces it gradually. We start with simple print statements and build up to classes over many lessons. Kids ages 10-12 who've had some coding exposure handle it well. The strict typing actually helps — the compiler catches mistakes and teaches precision.
We recommend Java for ages 10-12. Kids need to be comfortable with typing, basic math, and ideally have some prior coding experience (even just Scratch or our block coding track). Java's verbosity requires patience that younger kids may not have yet.
Both are excellent! Python is easier to start with (ages 8+). Java teaches stronger engineering habits — explicit types, classes from the start, and strict rules. If your child loves Minecraft, wants to build Android apps, or aims for computer science in college, Java is a great choice.
On Koke Lab, kids learn the fundamentals that directly apply to app development. While building production Android apps requires additional tools (Android Studio, XML layouts), the Java skills they learn here are 100% transferable. Many of our exercises simulate app-like scenarios.
Instead of boring textbook exercises, every lesson is a game. Kids earn XP for correct code, unlock badges for completing modules, and compete on streaks. Code exercises run in our browser-based environment — no complex IDE setup needed. Instant feedback on every line.
